Piton de la Fournaise has erupted more than 180 times since 1640, which makes it one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and one of the very few whose crater floor can be studied from the air in a single morning.
The island beneath it is younger than three million years, a basaltic shield pushed up from the Indian Ocean seabed and then torn open by erosion.
That tearing produced the cirques. Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate are collapse amphitheatres ringed by walls that rise more than a thousand metres, and they remain the reason a reunion helicopter ride exists as a category of travel here rather than a novelty. Mafate has no road. It never has. Its hamlets — Marla, La Nouvelle, Roche Plate — are reached on foot, by mule, or by rotor, and supplies still arrive slung beneath aircraft. UNESCO inscribed the Pitons, cirques and remparts of Réunion as World Heritage in 2010, citing precisely this topography of ramparts and ravines.
Commercial rotary flight over the island dates to the 1980s, when operators began working from Saint-Gilles on the leeward coast and later from Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds Airport in the south. Both remain the departure points today. The routings follow a logic dictated by weather rather than scenery: air rises against the eastern slopes through the morning, cloud builds over the interior by midday, and the clearest visibility falls in the window between 06:30 and 11:00. Pilots read the island the way sailors read a coast.
What the aircraft reveals is otherwise unreachable. Trou de Fer, a 300-metre cascade folded into the Bébour forest, is effectively invisible from any trail. The Enclos Fouqué caldera, the black lava deltas of the Grand Brûlé where flows reached the sea, the fractured basalt of the Plaine des Sables — these are geological arguments best read from above. Voile de la Mariée in Salazie and the terraced lentil fields of Cilaos add a human layer to the same frame.
Helicopter operations over the island are also functional. Medical evacuation, forestry survey and cirque resupply share the same airspace as visitors. The scenic flight simply borrows a working machine. Whether taken as a shared seat or as a private charter for an anniversary or proposal, a reunion helicopter ride is the shortest route to understanding why the island's interior stayed uninhabited so long.
