Piton de la Fournaise has erupted more than 180 times since 1640, making it one of the most active volcanoes on Earth — and one of the few whose caldera can be circled by air in under twenty minutes.
That geological restlessness is the reason a helicopter ride reunion island became the island's defining vantage point rather than a luxury novelty.
Réunion rose from the Indian Ocean roughly three million years ago, built by two shield volcanoes. The elder, Piton des Neiges, collapsed inward and eroded into three vast amphitheatres: Cirque de Mafate, Cirque de Salazie, and Cirque de Cilaos. Together with the ramparts and remparts that divide them, they form the Pitons, cirques et remparts UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 2010 and covering about forty percent of the island's surface. Mafate has no road. Its roughly 800 residents receive supplies by helicopter, which is how rotor aircraft first became ordinary here — freight before tourism.
Why the island matters today is partly a question of access. The interior is a landscape of hanging valleys, waterfalls that fall several hundred metres, and îlets — small settled terraces perched between cliffs. On foot, crossing Mafate takes days. From the air, the same terrain resolves in a single arc, and the geological logic becomes legible: the collapse scarps, the drainage channels of the Rivière des Galets, the black basalt tongues of the Enclos Fouqué reaching the coast at the Grand Brûlé. This is why scenic helicopter flights over Réunion Island are treated as interpretive rather than merely recreational.
The machinery is unremarkable by design. Operators fly from Aéroport de Pierrefond in Saint-Pierre, on the drier southwest coast, where morning air is more often clear of the orographic cloud that seals the interior by midday. Flight paths trace the Trou de Fer canyon, the Voile de la Mariée waterfall, Cilaos and its thermal springs, and the summit crater of Dolomieu, which collapsed 330 metres in April 2007. Helicopter ride reunion island tours have followed broadly the same corridors for three decades, refined by weather patterns rather than fashion. Pilots narrate in French, often English, and the commentary is geological as much as scenic. What the passenger sees is not a view of the island so much as its cross-section — an eroded volcanic dome, still building, still falling apart.
