Piton de la Fournaise has erupted more than 180 times since 1640, making it one of the most active volcanoes on Earth — and one of the few whose caldera can be circled in a single morning by air.
The island it sits on rose from the Indian Ocean roughly three million years ago, built by two shield volcanoes stacked against each other. Piton des Neiges, extinct for some 12,000 years, forms the older western mass. Erosion did the rest.
That erosion produced the three cirques: Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate. Each is a collapsed amphitheatre of rock, ringed by ramparts that fall more than a kilometre. Mafate has no road. Its hamlets — Marla, La Nouvelle, Roche Plate — are reached on foot or by rotor, and supplies still arrive slung beneath helicopters. UNESCO inscribed the Pitons, cirques and remparts as World Heritage in 2010, citing a landscape of exceptional scenic quality and endemic biodiversity. Civil aviation came late to the island. The airfield at Gillot, now Aéroport de La Réunion Roland Garros in Sainte-Marie, was laid out in the 1930s and named for the Réunionnais aviator Roland Garros, born in Saint-Denis in 1888. Rotary-wing operations grew alongside the island's forestry and rescue services before scenic flights became a commercial category in their own right. The aircraft used today are largely turbine singles and twins configured for visibility — bubble windows, forward-facing benches, intercom commentary.
What the aerial vantage reveals is topographic logic invisible from the road. The Trou de Fer, a 300-metre cascade in the Bébour-Bélouve forest, is effectively unreachable on foot. Grand Bassin sits at the base of a gorge. The Enclos Fouqué, the horseshoe caldera that channels Fournaise's lava toward the sea, reads as a single geological gesture only from altitude. Basalt flows from 2007 and 2021 remain black against older vegetation, dating themselves by colour.
The island's weather governs everything. Trade winds stack cloud against the eastern ramparts by midday, which is why survol en hélicoptère La Réunion operations concentrate in the early hours.
